Our annual trek to the Kern River was another great success. This one was filled with adventure as well. The trip up saw us face to face with wild fires in the area. Our Class A motorhome was buffeted by Class A winds, luckily they were blowing the fire ‘away’ from our rig. Randy was white knuckled and I was freaking out when I got “No Cell Service” instead of our good friends and fishing/camping buddies Rick and Cindy on the phone.

As luck happened, the road closure to our camp area was lifted after only an hour of waiting and the good times ensued.

I only have these two photos to share…

While, environmentally it is not the most stunning spot, it nonetheless is one of the more popular trips for our Road Runners RV group.

I remember back when; my nephews Zac and Max spent a weekend with us. They had journeyed down from Cambria, that storybook seaside community further north on the coast. Zac was just learning to ride a bike and he took full advantage of the uncrowded campground. He road up and down every row! When he was finished, he and his brother Max cooled off in the clubhouse pool.

If you make it out, be sure to stop by my rig for a Baja Fog!

What a great toy. I was up and running without instructions and completed my first clip; “Randy Washing the Trailer” immediately. I used the Flip’s built in software to upload the clip to FlipShare:

I didn’t know it came with instructions. Flash Buddy pointed out they were hiding under the tray in the box. I poked my finger in the little hole and pulled up the tray and there they were!

One Thing Leads to Another

It was suggested by my bro to setup a YouTube account and share my video productions with the world. That didn’t go so good as one must have a Gmail account before they can have a YouTube account. I started setting up a Gmail account and got lost, frustrated and foiled. Flash Buddy bailed me out by setting up my account remotely. He went on to setup my YouTube too. Check it out!

More Info

The October 2007 California wildfires were a series of wildfires that began burning across Southern California on October 20. At least 1,500 homes were destroyed and over 500,000 acres (2,000 km², or about 770 mi²) of land burned from Santa Barbara County to the U.S.–Mexico border. Nine people died as a direct result of the fires;[8] 85 others were injured, including at least 61 firefighters. The raging fire was visible from space.[10] California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in seven California counties where fires were burning. President George W. Bush concurred, and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local response efforts. Over 6,000 firefighters worked to fight the blazes; they were aided by units of the United States Armed Forces, United States National Guard, almost 3,000 prisoners convicted of non-violent crimes, and 60 firefighters from the Mexican cities of Tijuana and Tecate. The fires forced approximately 1,000,000 people to evacuate their homes, the largest evacuation in California’s history. Major contributing factors to the extreme fire conditions were drought in Southern California, hot weather, and the strong Santa Ana winds with gusts reaching 85 mph (140 km/h). California’s “fire season,” which traditionally runs from June to October, has become a year-round threat due to a mixture of perennial drought and the increasing number of homes built in canyons and on hillsides surrounded by brush and forest. The fires had numerous sources. Several were triggered by power lines damaged by the high winds. One fire started when a semi-truck overturned. Another was suspected as having been deliberately caused; the suspect was shot and killed in flight by state authorities. A 10-year-old boy admitted that he accidentally started the Buckweed Fire playing with matches. Causes of the remaining fires remain under investigation. The last fire was fully contained on November 9, 2007, 19 days after the series of fires started.

While visiting Mom and Dad Alexander we got to visit with my amazing brother who had arrived from Fort Collins (can’t believe he moved his family there). Flash Buddy pulled out his camera and I pulled out mine and we had a shoot-out. He chose the Canon while I use a Sony. Check out the Alexander/Jacobson album in my gallery for the fruits of our labor.
